What is Physio Pilates?

Physio pilates is a version of pilates modified through clinical physiotherapy knowledge and skills.

The History:

Pilates originated in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates, a personal trainer who devised workouts for the rehabilitation of soldiers recovering from the First World War, and later to help dancers recover from injuries. He described the exercise as “contrology” - this is a great way to describe the techniques we use in pilates to control movement patterns.

Physio pilates is a method of specific exercises that have been modified from the traditional pilates method by physiotherapists, in line with evidence-based treatment.

Pilates method is essentially a mind-body centering technique that emphasises the importance of beginning movement from a central core of stability. From this, pilates exercises are then implemented using various limb movements and resistance (whether that be bodyweight or using pilates equipment). Each exercise can be adjusted in intensity for all abilities.

There are two main forms of physio-pilates: mat-based and reformer. Mat-based classes utilise your bodyweight for exercises (as well as free standing pieces of equipment) while reformer classes use a bed shaped machine frame to add resistance to the pilates exercises via the use of the springs that form part of the machine.

Both forms of pilates focus on the same key principles and create the same benefits for the mind and body in a gradual graded way.
